Biomedical aspects of lectins.

چکیده

Studies on lectins are having an increasing impact on medicine, by providing new tools for diagnosis, helping to solve clinical problems, and giving new insights into pathological processes (Lis & Sharon, 1986a, b; Sharon & Lis, 1988). Two early discoveries: that certain lectins are bloodgroup specific while others are mitogenic, have led to their widespread use for blood typing, for assessing the immunocompetence of patients and for karyotyping. Another early finding, that lectins preferentially agglutinate malignant cells, has led to numerous attempts to use these proteins for cancer diagnosis.

Recombinant production of plant lectins in microbial systems for biomedical application – the frutalin case study

Frutalin is a homotetrameric partly glycosylated α-D-galactose-binding lectin of biomedical interest from Artocarpus incisa (breadfruit) seeds, belonging to the jacalin-related lectins family. As other plant lectins, frutalin is a heterogeneous mixture of several isoforms possibly with distinct biological activities. The main problem of using such lectins as biomedical tools is that "batch-to-b...

‘Borono-lectin’ based engineering as a versatile platform for biomedical applications

Boronic acids are well known for their ability to reversibly interact with the diol groups, a common motif of biomolecules including sugars and ribose. Due to their ability to interact with carbohydrates, they can be regarded as synthetic mimics of lectins, termed 'borono-lectins'. The borono-lectins can be tailored to elicit a broad profile of binding strength and specificity. This special pro...

Functional Recombinants Designed from a Fetuin/Asialofetuin-Specific Marine Algal Lectin, Rhodobindin

Plant lectins have attracted much attention for biomedical applications including targeted drug delivery system and therapy against tumors and microbial infections. The main problem of using lectins as a biomedical tool is a batch-to-batch variation in isoforms content. The production of lectins using recombination tools has the advantage of obtaining high amounts of proteins with more precise ...

Unique Carbohydrate Appearance of the Floor Plate During Early Neurolation

During early neurogenesis, the floor plate plays an essential role(s) in the differentiation of the ventral portion of neural tube. In this study, we detected the specific distribution of unique glycoconjugate during the floor plate differentiation. Formalin fixed paraffin sections of BALB/c mice (10-14 embryonic days) were processed for histochemical studies using horseradish peroxidase-labell...

Sympathetic Gangliogenesis and Temporo-Spatial Glycoconjugates’s Terminal Sugars Distribution

Lectin binding histochemistry was performed on the developing sympathetic ganglionic cells to investigate the distribution and density of defined carbohydrate terminals on the cell surface glycoproteins during autonomic system morphogenesis. Sprague-Dauley rat embryos from 9th gestational day to birth were fixed and paraffinized. Serial sections of these specimens were incubated with different ...
